Olbrich Botanical Gardens invites proposals for large-scale, light-based art for GLEAM, Art in a New Light, a public art exhibition situated within a 16-acre Midwest landscape or 10,000 sq ft tropical conservatory. The 2026 GLEAM exhibit will focus on light-based art concepts that present a captivating environment, offer creative play experience, and bring to light creatures of all shapes and sizes, real and imaginative. GLEAM will be open for public viewing from August 29 - October 24, 2026.
Olbrich Botanical Gardens is located in Madison, Wisconsin. Named for its founder, Michael B. Olbrich, the Gardens are owned and operated jointly by the City of Madison Parks Division and the non-profit Olbrich Botanical Society.
The 2026 GLEAM exhibit will focus on installation concepts that present an immersive environment, reveal an opportunity for reflection, or offer creative play experiences.
Proposals must utilise light as its major feature to achieve a dynamic nighttime presence. Components must be rated for long-term outdoor usage. Each installation must be of large enough scale to contribute to the overall illumination of the Gardens while accommodating hundreds of participants within a 3–4 hour viewing period. Installation concepts that include a community collaboration aspect will be given special consideration.
Local, regional, and international artists, collectives, architects, and lighting designers are invited to apply. Previous experience with illuminated installations, projections, and/or lighting design concepts, preferably with outdoor installations, is required.
Olbrich Gardens will consider installation budgets of 5,000 USD–30,000 USD. The budget should include: design fees, materials (including lighting fixtures, projectors, computers, weatherproofing components, etc.), fabrication, artist travel and lodging accommodations, labour (artist and assistants) to install/de-install, and maintenance/repairs/parts replacement.
