Promoted by Associazione Archeofuturo since 2018, In-ruins is a residency programme dedicated to the encounter between contemporary art and archaeology via the transitory settlement of artists, curators and researchers in towns neighbouring monumental sites in Calabria and the South, Italy.
In-ruins rethinks the territory through its past, turns ancient finds into places for encounter and shares urgent global narratives to the borders of peripheral territories. Rooting its activities within a meridian and Mediterranean horizon, the project aims to valorise both cultural heritage and the traditions, myths and stories of the very communities that guard it.
In-ruins residency 2024, from 9 September to 13 October, is organised in collaboration with Fondazione Elpis. This is the first year that it will take place outside Calabria to land in Basilicata. In collaboration with the National Museums of Matera – Regional Directorate of National Museums Basilicata, the residency will explore the National Museums and the Archaeological Park of Metaponto.
There are six research axes: borders in time, migrant landscapes, Apoikia and decolonisation, Helen’s egg, archeozoology of the present and industrial dreams and modern ruins.
The 2024 residents will be hosted in the municipality of Montescaglioso, a small town located between the San Giuliano Natural Reserve and the Ionian Sea, about 20 km from Metaponto Archaeological Park. The programme provides free access to Matera National Museums and Metaponto Archaeological Park, free accommodation, board (breakfast and dinner), and a production budget of 700 EUR per artist.
