Torhaus Berlin: ‘We Are Open’ Residency (Germany)

A small brick gatehouse building - the Torhaus Berlin. Bikes and mopeds are on the pavement around it. A big sign on the roof reads 'We Are Open'.

The Torhaus is a former gatekeepers house. There used to be a person in a uniform, opening and closing a gate, someone who was deciding if the documents you showed were sufficient to get access to the huge area of the Tempelhof Airport Building in Berlin.

This summer Torhaus is getting renovated and three groups/collectives/individuals will be invited to explore the gate turning into a house.

The slogan is ‘We are open!’ Not for business, but to all kinds of artistic practice. From performance to mixed media art, painting, sculpting and urban practice. Torhaus are looking for inspiring contemplations about how gates can become houses, how lines can become spaces, or any topics that you would like to research which are relevant to Torhaus’ story and mission.

Participants will have the possibility to work in Torhaus for two weeks. The space is small but sufficient and will have very basic infrastructure: heating, electricity, toilets, running water, and an internet connection.

Each of the 3 groups will get a 3500€ artist fee and up to 1000€ for materials.
