The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy announces the commencement of its first-ever Calligraphy Art Residency Programme. Designed to nurture the artistic capabilities of calligraphers and artists in the intricacies of Arabic calligraphy, this initiative aims to foster an environment of creativity, knowledge circulation, and cultural exchange both locally and internationally, while also fostering a deeper sense of pride in local identity.

Scheduled to run from 21 August to 16 October 2024 in Al-Madinah (Medina), Saudi Arabia, the eight-week programme will host 10 resident artists from diverse backgrounds and specialisations. Participants, both local and international, will have access to workshops, intensive lessons, and collaborative training sessions aimed at enhancing their skills and encouraging exploration and experimentation across various disciplines.

Under the curatorship of Zaki Al Hashimi and programme management by Bander Al-Amry, the residency will culminate in a week-long open studio event from 14 to 20 October 2024, allowing the public to engage with the artists and their works.

In addition to studio activities, the programme will offer workshops, development sessions, lectures, discussions, studio visits, and cultural tours within Al-Madinah, enhancing residents’ understanding and appreciation of Arabic calligraphy in both practical and theoretical aspects.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, proficient in Arabic and/or English, and possess moderate experience in Arabic calligraphy or related visual arts.

The residency programme provides accommodation, private workspaces, round-trip economy class flight tickets, visa facilitation for international participants, monthly support for personal expenses, production grants, and transportation for planned group trips.
