transmediale is calling for applications for its 2026 residency programme. Amid escalating political and ecological urgencies and deepening societal divides, this year’s open call for residents invites proposals that explore the relational modes of digital art practices that critically engage with the social dimensions and (mis)uses of technology.
The transmediale residency programme offers researchers, artists, theorists, practitioners, and activists the opportunity for a two-month hybrid residency, taking place on-site in Berlin and remotely between May and July 2026. The residencies aim to foster further research on already existing projects or to develop new projects in the fields of media studies, science and technology studies, media art and theory, art criticism, or digital art and moving image practices.
There are three residency strands available:
- Digital Art Residency in cooperation with Pro Helvetia for two Swiss or Switzerland-based artists (working in digital art practices, design, sound, media theory): an artist fee of 2,000 EUR per month plus per diem for the month in Berlin, travel and accommodation for the festival and residency, an additional production grant of 15,000 CHF
- transmediale x ARKO Residency in cooperation with ARKO for one Korean artist, based in Korea or elsewhere (working in digital art and moving image practices, design, sound, and media theory): an artist fee of 1,500 EUR per month, additional support for production plus travel and accommodation
- Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research in cooperation with Universität der Künste Berlin for one artist based in Berlin (working in digital art and moving image practices, design, sound, and media theory): an artist fee of 1,500 EUR per residency month
Applications from duos or collectives are considered, however the fee remains the same and needs to be split accordingly.
