The Bauhaus of the Seas was first presented in 2020 as a manifesto that answered to the challenge of the New European Bauhaus, a creative initiative that connects the European Green Deal to people’s living spaces and experiences, guided by the values of sustainability, inclusion and creativity. This manifesto encouraged a European mobilisation around the most decisive global natural spaces: the seas.
In Portugal, in a partnership between CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Instituto Superior Técnico and the municipalities of Oeiras and Lisbon, the projects Ocean Literacy, Blue Makerspace, and Regenerative Menu are being developed with the aim of bringing a cross disciplinary understanding on how we can contribute to a more conscientious sustainable future. These will result in a public programme of activities, multidisciplinary residencies, and exhibitions across cultural spaces.
The project currently has a call for three residencies.
- Art & Science Residency ‘A Call to the Sea’: Fully funded three-month international residency for collaborative projects between visual artists, scientists, and the local community aimed at rethinking zoologic museum collections, which takes place in one of the oldest aquariums in the word – the Vasco da Gama Aquarium – focusing on themes of more-than-human geographies.
- Art & Food Residency ‘Eating Between Tides’: Fully funded three-month international residency for collaborative projects between artists, chefs, youth, and the local community to create a menu that highlights global food system challenges and proposes innovative regenerative solutions for the future, with a specific focus on the bioregion Mar da Palha (Tagus River) in Lisbon.
- Art & Design Residency ‘Radical Waters – Concrete Matters’: Fully funded three-month international residency for collaborative projects aimed at exploring research-based water material applications in coastal urban environments, aiming to inspire regenerative change within the local mindset ecosystem, focusing on the bioregion Mar da Palha (Tagus River).
The expected outcomes vary for each residency (see each page for more details).
This open call is for artists and collectives. The submitted project should span three months and be carried out between 1 July and 1 December 2024.
The financial support is 10,000 EUR, which should cover fees, expenses and production.
