Elizabeth A-i-R announces an open call for photographers and artists working in the medium of photography to apply for a one-month residency grant in Budapest in spring 2022.
In the heart of Budapest the Elizabeth Artist-in-Residence programme offers a spacious studio space which carries the rich memory of its former inhabitants who often used photography addressing the ephemeral and the latent.
The Elizabeth A-i-R is initiated in collaboration of the municipality of Erzsébetváros and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest. Erzsébetváros (Elizabeth town) is located within Budapest, Hungary. It is the 7th district of the capital city, situated in the centre of the city between the inner and outer boulevards on the Pest side of the Danube. The inner half of the district was the historic Jewish quarter, with the largest functioning synagogue in Europe. Currently Erzsébetváros is the most densely populated district of Budapest. A hundred years ago it had 150 thousand inhabitants, but during the socialist era Erzsébetváros’s population decreased rapidly as residents moved outwards from the city center. Gentrification and recovery started in the mid 2000s, with a boom of cultural establishments and clubs, dubbed as ruin pubs.
MOME is the leading design university in Hungary with photography BA and MA programs encompassing a near forty-year history of excellence and constant renewal. The university celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2020.
Upon arrival to Budapest the artist will be granted a fee of 1000 euro for living expenses and another 1000 euro for the production of a pop-up exhibition at a downtown Budapest venue. Elizabeth A-i-R covers travel expenses up to 500 euro.
