The Rele Arts Foundation introduces The R2 Space, a visual arts residency programme for mid-career ( ages 35 and upwards) African and diaspora artists. The residency will be open to artists of various disciplines and backgrounds as well as to curators, art writers and researchers.
The Young Contemporaries Programme 2027 is an initiative designed to support young artists. Through mentorship, immersive residencies, and curated exhibitions, the programme aims to nurture artistic growth, explore innovative mediums and narratives, and elevate the contemporary art scene in Africa. Successful applicants will be invited to be part of a residency programme led by notable international curators and mentors. The Residency is an intensive workshop programme specially designed to guide and educate emerging artists on critical thinking as well as identifying and harnessing their talent.
Selected participants will have demonstrated a critical and rigorous approach to artistic practice and research, the relevance of their proposed project to contemporary art discourse, and a committed and engaged attitude to their practice. Participants of the R2 Space residency will benefit from a provision of space and funding during the period of residence to help develop and materialise their ideas as well as the option to present their project in the gallery space. The Foundation encourages applications that focus on a critical engagement with the city of Lagos but they are also open to other explorations and areas of research.
