International Shakespeare Festival Craiova 2026 Call for Visual Artists (Romania)

Title of the call with coloured circles.

Universitatea Naţională de Artă Teatrală şi Cinematografică (UNATC) in partnership with the International Shakespeare Festival Craiova is calling for applications from independent visual artists to participate in a curated programme connected with the 2026 International Shakespeare Festival Craiova.

The overall theme for the 2026 edition is ‘Will Matters’, inspired by Prospero’s final speech in The Tempest.

This opportunity supports independent visual artists to create and present work that reflects, responds to, or is inspired by William Shakespeare – whether his life, writings, characters, costumes, locations or newly explored perspectives on the Bard of Avon.

Selected artists are expected to travel to, live in, work in and exhibit their work in Craiova, Romania, during the festival approximately between 15–25 May 2026.

The call is open to five international independent visual artists, from Romania or elsewhere. Artists may apply individually or as collaborative pairs or groups of 3–5.

Successful applicants will receive support including travel expenses or return flights up to 500 EUR per artist, an artist’s participation fee of 1,000 EUR, and up to 500 EUR towards art materials, technology, logistics or labour. Accommodation in central Craiova is provided, along with three meals per day for the duration of the stay, working space/studio access, exhibition space with technical support, and media exposure.
