The Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) | Free Republic of Vienna is calling for applications for fifteen scholarships for artists and cultural workers from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia and Hungary under the heading In the Field. In the framework of a ten-day programme, In the Field facilitates transregional networking and transfer of knowledge in the context of an international theatre festival, bringing together participants from a 300-kilometre radius around Vienna.
This year, In the Field will be accompanied by the choreographer, dancer, researcher and activist Ulduz Ahmadzadeh as the mentor. The programme runs from 29 May to 7 June 2026.
The recipients of the scholarship will visit performances, rehearsals and artistic-discursive formats every day as well as meeting artists and experts together. In workshops designed by the participants, they will share experiences, knowledge and practical skills. In the Field also shines a spotlight on local developments by connecting the scholarship holders with important agents in the Viennese cultural landscape.
The programme is aimed at artists and cultural workers at the start of their careers and advanced students of various disciplines, and in particular at those whose practice is located at the intersection of art, activism and participation.
The group will consist of five scholarship recipients from Vienna and ten from the federal provinces and neighbouring countries whose home or work life centre is located within a radius of 300 km around Vienna.
Participation in In the Field is free of charge for recipients of the scholarship and includes tickets for selected performances. For all scholarship holders from outside of Vienna the programme covers travel costs (up to 200 EUR) to cover the journey to and from Vienna by train or coach and accommodation.
