La Chartreuse – Centre national des écritures du spectacle, in partnership with the Fonds Fanak and the Maison Antoine Vitez – Centre international de la traduction théâtrale, invites a new generation of artists from the Mediterranean region working in the field of dramatic writing to take part in a writing residency and theatrical experimentation programme. The residency will take the form of an international writing campus from 30 May to 8 June 2026.
This initiative is part of the Mediterranean Season 2026. It aims to support contemporary Arabic-language writing that is still rarely translated and disseminated, and to encourage the circulation of texts and encounters between a new generation of artists across the Mediterranean.
It will bring together playwrights, translators and young actors for a laboratory of creation, exchange and experimentation around works in progress inspired by the theme: Who leaves and returns — what will remain of their trace?
For the three selected projects, the residency aims to support the development of the work in progress, the translation into French of its opening pages, and collaboration with a group of drama students for a first staged reading. During their stay, participants will have access to La Chartreuse’s resources: theatre library, dramaturgical support, and shared reflection sessions.
The call is open to playwrights residing and working on a regular basis in one of the following countries: Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, or Morocco. Applicants must be able to converse simply in French.
La Chartreuse will award each participant an individual grant of 700 EUR gross. This grant covers assistance and insurance costs, local transportation, subsistence expenses, and project-related expenses. La Chartreuse also covers:
- Round-trip international travel and land travel
- Visa fees and travel insurance (if applicable)
- On-site accommodation
