Goethe-Institut Glasgow, Alliance Française Glasgow and Institut Français (Scotland) > Artificial Intelligence in Residence

DE

The Goethe-Institut Glasgow, the Alliance Française Glasgow and the Institut Français d’Ecosse invite contemporary artists based in France or in Germany to apply for one of two residencies taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow from 1 June to 5 July 2020. The aim of the programme is to contribute to the interdisciplinary discourse between artists and partners around the topic of Artificial Intelligence.

The programme consists of two residencies. One of them takes place in collaboration with the National Library of Scotland (NLS) in Edinburgh and the other one with the Social Brain in Action Lab (SoBA Lab) at the University of Glasgow. The artistic outcomes of these residencies will be presented during work-in-progress showings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The selected applicant will have the opportunity to share their research/work in an event-based format at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow. Another occasion to present the outcomes of the residencies will be at the NEoN Digital Arts Festival which will take place in Dundee from 12-15 November 2020. NEoN (North East of North) aims to advance the understanding and accessibility of digital and technology driven art forms and to encourage high quality within the production of this medium.

The residency with the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh is aimed at contemporary artists who work with Artificial Intelligence and within the fields of visual arts, poetry, sound, media art and digital art. The main question is: How does AI technology open up new opportunities to interact with libraries and their collections and what are the challenges and opportunities of using it in this context?

The residency with the Social Brain in Action Lab in Glasgow is aimed at contemporary performance artists. The main question here is: How is the increasing presence of robots in our social lives impacting our social behaviour?

The residency is funded, working space provided and suitable production costs taken care of. In addition, artists will receive 1 000€ to cover living expenses, and travel and accommodation will be covered by the partner institutions. The artist-in-residence will also receive mentorship from the research teams at the SoBA Lab and the NLS.
